Making friends with my discomfort

Making friends with my discomfort.
Uncomfortable as it may seem.

Making friends with my discomfort.
She's every bit a part of me.

Love Beats Hate

Whether young or old, each of us craves validation. But that doesn’t stop those who marginalize a particular group of people in order to create a sense of superiority – possibly to seek the very validation lacking from their own lives.

Although a negative event inspired “Love Beats Hate,” something very positive is occurring because of it. Today, along with scores of bloggers, I’m celebrating people who choose love above hate; those who have dealt with injustices and vowed never to let another person suffer through the same struggles alone. Because you’ve “been there” and “done that,” empathy guides you to extend a friendly hand, lend an ear, or provide a shoulder to cry on.

You join social networks, discussion forums, you blog about your experiences, or even upload video commentary - not because someone’s paying you, but because you’ve become the very friend you wish you had had when you were at your lowest point. That’s love.

Bloggers like me are rallying today, not only for sanity, but to shine a light on those who would rather sympathize than ostracize. Because life gifted us with our own experience, we seize the opportunity to use what we know to educate, support and motivate those who stand where we once stood. Even by just sharing our journey, we elevate the spirit of others. After all, how many of us have felt depleted after hearing a condescending comment, be it directed toward us or a particular group considered outside the norm?

The Internet plays such an important role in bringing together individuals from all walks of life. Someone on the other side of the world may understand what you’re going through more than your own family. There’s nothing quite like reading “You are not alone” from a stranger. I know it’s made a huge difference in my life.

I thank you for being a part of today’s blogging event, and I look forward to reading what others are sharing. Even by just spreading the word, you’ve proven how much love beats hate.

Dollars for Docs: What Drug Companies are Paying Your Doctor

It isn't illegal, but just how much could receiving money from pharmaceutical companies influence your doctor? To find out if your doctor has received drug company money, use the widget on the right hand column of my blog.

Is your doctor listed? Would you continue to see him or her if they were?
