Partly Cloudy with a Chance of Migraine

I miss experiencing the changing of the seasons. Or maybe I just think I do because I'm spoiled by California's climate. Summers on the east coast were pretty grueling; the humidity just about killed me. On the other hand, because I don't live by the beach, my California summers are hot, dry and tend to cause cracking skin and nose bleeds. So, what are some of the things this Migraineur does to get through the arid summers of Southern California?

1) Keep hydrated with plenty of filtered water

2) Eat cooling foods - here are more great Ayurvedic tips for keeping cool during the summer

3) Saline Mist nasal spray for dry nasal passages

4) Dr. Bronner's Organic Lip Balms for dry, cracking lips

5) Organic Coconut Oil for spot healing any heat rashes

6) Homemade cooling packs placed around the neck - fill a tube sock with uncooked rice, tie a knot at both ends, and place in the freezer in a sealed bag; make two so you can switch them out

7) Ceiling fans and oscillating floor fans are great, but when I have to I use the air conditioner - check those filters

8) Polarized sunglasses - you shouldn't need to spend more than $25 for a good pair

9) Sunscreen - try not to be in the sun midday

10) A quick, cool shower is another option to a dip in the pool, if you can't tolerate chlorine.

What are some of your suggestions for keeping those nasty summer Migraines at bay?

I have never thought of making my own cooling pack - I must try that one! I'm still looking around to figure out who sells Dr Bronner's stuff here in the UK and will let you know when I've tried it, thanks again for the suggestion xx

Hey Amanda, I found this UK company through Dr. Bronner's website:

You may have to copy and paste the URL. Good luck :)

Jasmine,

Great tips! With all the different heat/cooling packs I've seen over the years, I never saw - or thought of - the tube sock idea. That's awesome.

Stay cool. Oh, that's right... you are ALWAYS cool! Hee hee. (You know... the other kind of COOL?) ;)

Thank you, Jeanne :)

The best part about the sock is it doesn't stay cold for too long, so if you fall asleep with it, you're safe. Also it won't burn the skin like those blue ice packs can (wrap them in a small towel or pillow case to protect the skin).

Thank you, MigrainePuppet. I'm now celebrating with my hormonal migraine because without her I wouldn't have come this far :D

Hugs,

I will be running home after work and making those cold packs, what a brilliant idea, thanks!

Melanie, my physical therapist is definitely brilliant. She finds all kinds of uses for items we already have around the house.

Another trick is placing tennis balls inside a sock, to massage those hard-to-reach sore spots. She once gave me a frozen burrito because it was the perfect shape (and temperature) for neck pain relief.
